UN Tourism.TedQual

UN Tourism.TedQual is a UN Tourism Academy programme whose main objective is to improve the quality of the tourism education, training, and research programmes. For this purpose, evaluation criteria– universally applicable to any institution – have been defined to seek, among other things, to measure the efficiency of their academic system, as well as their degree of incorporation of the tourism industry and students needs to those programmes.

To this end, in 1998, the UN Tourism Education and Training Department and the UN Tourism.Themis Foundation created what is now the fundamental pillar of the Programme: the UN Tourism.TedQual Certification System, which is composed of a series of evaluation criteria - universally applicable to any tourism education, training and research programme -  that makes it possible to measure the effectiveness of the pedagogical system as well as to which extent are covered the needs of the tourism sector, civil society and the students in such programmes.

With this purpose, this quality certification examines six areas of analysis (processes): The employers, The student, The curriculum and pedagogical system, The Faculty, and The management, and the Accomplishment of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism.

Requirements

The UN Tourism.TedQual certification can be requested for any tourism education, training, or research programme that is delivered on a regular basis and has at least one cohort of graduates.

Procedure

The process for the UN Tourism.TedQual certification usually takes between 8 to 12 months, and follows these steps:

  • Request: The education or training centre sends an expression of interest to UN Tourism Academy and fills out the registration form.
  • Self-assessment: Upon reception of the form, the education or training centre completes the self-assessment form and sends it to UN Tourism Academy.
  • Preparation: While preparing for the audit, the centre is to compile the documentary evidence demonstrating what was reported in the self-evaluation and send it to the UN Tourism.TedQual auditor.
  • Audit: Once the documents have been analysed, the UN Tourism.TedQual auditor may request additional proof, will meet with stakeholders of the 6 areas of analysis, and assess the campus infrastructure, among others.
  • Certification: Upon successful completion of the audit, the programme is awarded the certification for either 1, 2, 3 or 4 years, depending on the results obtained.

Fees

The costs associated with the UN Tourism.TedQual certification are based on:

  • the country classification where the centre is located according to the UNDP’s Human Development Index.
  • whether the education or training centre is private or public.
  • the number of programmes to be certified.
