General Guidelines for Using Data on International Air-Passenger Traffic for Tourism Analysis

IATA and the UNWTO have worked together to compile this report in order to help explain to a technical audience how useful information generated by international air passenger traffic can be for the purpose of analysing tourism. This type of data can be used to complement passenger arrival numbers with basic characteristics such as country of residence, visitor typology, purpose of trip, main form of accommodation used and main destination. In addition, this information can be used to help gauge the size and behaviour of the main tourist-generating markets. This information is derived from administrative controls and the maintenance of comprehensive records of flight arrivals and departures.
